'Rents v.s Advertising

Ok, the age old question....who monitors what children (teens)view on line? My vote is the parents. I believe the computer should be in a room (like the living or dining)where the parents can come in and see what is going on. They can see who and what is on that screen. Parental controls are becoming easier to use, and almost standard with most providers.

What set me off on this, you ask....Spykes....I really shouldn't watch the news...

I remember being a teen, and teen drinking. And though the ads were not a sophisticated as this, they did have an impact. But more of, wow, that was a really stupid commercial. If I wanted to drink, I got a hold of my older friends, or, by 18....my first "husband"(man, I was stupid). I guess this just yanked my chain, because some parents want to hold advertisers responsible for their children's actions. Now, I don't think advertisers or the manufactures should get off scott free, but, ultimately, it is our jobs, as parents, to set the example, and communicate with our kids. That alone, could make all the difference in the world.

What do I know,I am just a parent....lol

I'm going to have to argue that, at least partially. I think that parenting is supposed to lay the ultimate groundwork for good decisions, but a stupid teenager isn't much of a match for a well planned ad made by highly paid professionals who are adults and get paid big money to draw them in. Part of that is a question of who has the bigger motivation. Kids are into the forbidden, ad companies know that, kids are into being cool, accepted, liked, and part of the gang, ad companies know that too. I think that the blame and consequences should be equal, they know what they are doing and really, they can ruin your teen's life at most and make your life as a parent much, much harder at least.
